“Latin is a dead language, it is plain to see. It killed off all the Romans, and now it’s killing me.” – a comment in my high school yearbook from a Latin student classmate
Illegitimi Non Carborundum
As is common in the work place, I one time found myself working with someone who was driving me crazy. Since I loved my job, which at the time was environmental reporter at a 65,000 circulation daily newspaper, and the person making me crazy had the power to fire me, I knew I needed to find a way to cope.
Knowing my frustration, a friend gave me a desk plaque that read: Illegtimi Non Carborundum. If you don’t know what it means, and since I don’t want to make this an X-rated blog, check it out at: http://tinyurl.com/rsbmp
Looking at the Latin saying usually eased the tension in my shoulders so I could do my job.
The funny part of this story is that only the person who could accurately translate the Latin quote, was the person who was “wearing” me down.
Thankfully, he never knew he was why I had it on my desk. He was that kind of person – thankfully.
Bean Pat: Velvet Verbosity http://tinyurl.com/lk9ptjv It’s nice to know that perhaps one day we can stop faking it. I, like this blogger, was quite a late bloomer
Good advise, and not just for the workplace! 😀
That’s long been a favorite quote of mine, Pat, as well as making me grateful for the years I took Latin in high school.
I didn’t have the opportunity to take Latin, but I see a knowledge of it would be an advantage.
Love the painting.
Latin was one of my favorite subjects in school Kathy.. But then I loved school, still do.
Hi Pat, I love that little ditty. In ninth grade, I detested Latin. That was too bad that I didn’t see its relevance to modern English.
Almost everybody took Spanish, Bob. And I didn’t want to be like almost everybody. I’m really glad now that I took Latin instead of French or German, which were the other two language classes offered. I wonder if Latin is still on any school’s class menu.
you crack me up so funny… Ido love the bird too…….. glad i snatched up the parrot ahahahahahahahahahahhaahha
Sounds like a hint..
I am a lover of Latin! Just want to say Pat how much I am enjoying your paintings!
Thanks Jude. I’m really enjoying getting back to painting.
I went to high school so long ago that Latin was the only “foreign language” offered! LOL
Love this! I took Latin many years ago and actually loved it. Your painting is very lovely 🙂
