“Being solitary is being alone well: being alone luxuriously immersed in doings of your own choice, are of the fullness of your presence rather than the absence of others. Because solitude is an achievement.” — Alice Koller
One Brown Pelican

A lone brown pelican photographed in Aransas Bay during a trip out to see whooping cranes on Matagorda Island. It was a cool day and I had the choice of standing alone on deck or enjoying the camaraderie of other mothers inside the boat’s cabin. I did both. — Photograph by Pat Bean
I daily count my blessings, and one of them is that I enjoy my own company. That’s not to say I don’t like people. I do, and I need them.
Just not all the time.
There is nothing about this post that I don’t love. The quote is so true. The choice of picture fits perfectly. It’s a great photograph too. I can feel the sun, hear the waves, smell the water, hear the sounds of birds wheeling overhead, a tugboat’s horn in the distance… And you personal sentiment at the end – I couldn’t agree more. Very nice.
What a lovely compliment. Thank you very much.
You’re welcome.
That quote is spot on. And your photo is beautiful.
Thanks Val, and for the follow. I like your blog, too, and am now following it as well.
Very nice! Yesterday a solitary pelican swam across the river and visited me for half an hour. We had a unique silent conversation, and when it grew bored, it returned to the water and swam back to the other side! Of course, I loved your image! Z
It IS wonderful to come to the point n your life where you CAN enjoy your own company and not be lonely. When I was young I could never have imagined enjoying my own company….I love it. I can be around others but I have to keep a balance.
Take care,
Joni
It certainly is Joni. Thanks for commenting.
Love the picture and love your view of solitude. I should frame it and glue it to my forehead for those days when I’m having a guilt attack for enjoying my own company:)
Thanks. I think women enjoy their own company more than men. > Date: Mon, 24 Sep 2012 15:19:04 +0000 > To: patbean@msn.com >
Beautiful words and photo! 🙂 I also enjoy my time alone, and I also realize my time with people is also precious and needed.
Wonderful image and words, Pat. I know just what you mean. 🙂
