“I believe humans get a lot done, not because we’re smart, but because we have thumbs so we can make coffee.” — Flash Rosenberg.
And Today Was a Very Good Day
I like my morning coffee, strong and heavily laced with half and half.
Drinking two cups every day is my morning ritual. That means I pour coffee into my mug at least, well sometimes I have three cups, 730 times annually. Multiply that by old-broad years.
Now I ask you, how many of those thousands of times that I’ve poured coffee from the pot into a cup do you think I’ve dribbled coffee on the counter while doing so?
My guess is that 50 percent of those times might be a bit too low. And I suspect I’m not alone in this. I’ve tried tilting the pot every which way but nothing ever seemed to work.
It took my son, Michael, whom I flew to Chicago yesterday to visit, to tell me what I was doing wrong. I decided I would tell all you readers who might not be as smart as Michael, who figured it out 10 years ago.
“It’s simply a matter of pouring it slowly Mother,” he told me this morning. “The design of the spout on the coffee pot is flawed.”
And all of a sudden I could see it. Duh! I thought.
So how many of you are as smart as my son, Michael? And how many as dumb as me?
My mom was a coffee addict. Each morning she would stand in front of the coffee maker with her mug and she had the most evil look on her face. No one talked to her until she had her first cup.
I’m as dumb as you and certainly impatient. I’d drink it from the carafe if I wouldn’t scald my mouth!
Laughing out loud.
Pat, we would get along fabulously with drinking our coffee, chatting, photographing in the afternoon and writing about it later. And yes, my kids are smarter than me, sometimes so blatantly obvious. If you are in Illinois, I’m not far from Chicago. Come visit. :).
I’m just here until Tuesday and then flying back to Texas. Wish I could visit. Perhaps one of these days if I make it up to the area again in my RV.

Put me in the dumb column! Slower, huh?
Patience is the key Michael said. That’s hard for someone like me who thinks patience is another word for couch potato..

Well, now I know… lol
Thanks Pat I’ve learned something new today 🙂
Hi,
I am also a coffee drinker, the very first thing I do every morning as soon as I get up is turn on the kettle, for my first cup for the day, I usually have 2 cups of a morning, but in winter, this does change to maybe more. 😀
HA! I am in the smart group for a change!!!!I I never spill my coffee EVER and I have the same machine as pictured…YUP I’m bragging because it is NOT often I get to brag about being smarter than anyone…IN YOUR FACES! LOL
Good for you. A worthy brag.

lift the lid slightly with yur thumb while pouring and it won’t dribble. My son jeremy showed us that trick — if the lid is down it dribbles.
My espresso drip when poured too quick, I know this. It happens still despite the knowledge. I just need the coffee, right.
I drink about 5 or 6 cups a day, confirmed addict.
Jim
I’m in the dumb category. Thank you.
Tell Michael hello for me. Thanks for the tip on pouring coffee. Just bought one of those single serve coffee servers. Fresh every cup. Now i drink too much. Come for a cup when you make it to Utah Pat.
Your welcome too Michael if you get out here.
I love learning something new! Patience must be a virtue, after all.
Pour coffee slow? Who would have thunk it? I’ll try to remember that in my pre-coffee fugue tomorrow morning
This is good to know! I’ll have to give it a try. I rarely drink coffee, but when I do, the kitchen counter always gets its dose of caffeine too.
